Reading Time: The Importance of Teaching Your Child to Read

Did you ever sit down and just think what the world would be like for you if you did not know how to read? Many of us are so fortunate to have been taught how to read that we don't even realize how much reading we do a day. Perhaps we may be reading a novel, or maybe it is just street signs and a restaurant menu. Just imagine if you were not able to, what would your world be like? Now ask yourself, would you want that for your child?

According to Grim Illiteracy Statistics, there are over 42 million American adults that can not read. You do not want your child to become one of them. Try and teach your child from very early on the gift of reading. You can do this by taking a little bit of time each day to set aside some special time to read with your child. No matter how young or old they are they are, it is good to get them into the habit of reading.

Reading stimulates the mind and encourages your child to use their imagination. It also helps your child develop listening skills. As you read to your child, show them the pictures and point to the words. Your child will learn to associate the pictures with the words. As your child grows and develops they will eventually point to the pictures and turn the pages. By you setting aside some time to read to your child, it makes this a pleasant experience for your child. Then, as your child gets older, they will want to read on their own and know the joy of reading.

Here are a few tips for reading with your child:

1- Set aside some a special reading time daily
2- Find a book that will grab their attention
3- Find an area that is comfortable with no distractions
4- Make book time a fun time
5- Be sure to be patient with your child
6- When you read, read slowly, show emotion
7- Point to the pictures and explain what the picture is
8- Encourage your child to read by giving them cloth or board books to play with.

A book is the greatest gift of all. Reading helps your child develop their imagination, creativity, good listening skills and communication. You do not want your child to grow up to be one of them 42 million Americans that can not read. Prevent this by making reading a habit. Encourage reading from early on in your child's life.
